DC Movie ‘Wonder Twins’ Shut Down by Warner Bros.

Looks like it is official that The Wonder Twins won’t be happening. I hope we see KJ in another superhero role sometime!

THR – The Wonder Twins have been deactivated.

The DC-based feature project, which was to have begun production in early July, has been shelved, according to multiple sources.

The project was being developed as a feature for HBO Max and had Riverdale star KJ Apa and 1883 actress Isabel May on board to star. Adam Sztykiel, who worked on the script for Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming Black Adam, wrote the Wonder Twins script and was due to direct.

Sources say the decision to shut the project down occurred several weeks ago. According to insiders, the leadership of Warner Bros. Discovery, the new company combining Discovery and Warner Bros. and now being led by CEO David Zaslav, is imposing a mandate that DC movies should now be made with a theatrical-first goal. Wonder Twins, the way it had been conceived, was “too niche,” said one source.

At the same time, one source said the budget was too high for what is considered an HBO Max movie. Twins was looking at a $75 million budget but according to sources, Zaslav wants to keep HBO Max original movies $35 million and under. He has concluded that higher budgeted offerings do not add enough value, ie., add a significant number of subscribers, as much as having the more modestly-budgeted movies that seem to do the job of retaining subs. Original theatrical movies, however, do a gangbuster job of attracting subscribers, The Batman being a huge hit for the service, according to several sources.

“A lot of things that were developed are going to do away,” said another insider, referring to the broader scrutiny that is coming to the slates of many Warner divisions, including film.

The Wonder Twins are a pair of alien siblings named Zan and Jayna. They imprinted on a generation of television viewers thanks to their introduction on Hanna-Barbera’s The All-New Super Friends Hour as young companions to adult heroes such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. The duo then appeared in the Super Friends comic and, over time, became incorporated into the larger DC universe.

Geek site That Hashtag Show first reported the news of the project’s shutdown on May 1 and a Warner Bros. spokesperson denied the account at the time.

‘The Wonder Twins’ HBO Max Movie Powers Activate With KJ Apa & Isabel May

Riverdale – Riverdale star KJ Apa and 1883 actress Isabel May have nabbed the alien-sibling lead roles in The Wonder Twins, a live-action DC comedy for HBO Max.

Apa will play Zan, and May will portray Jayna.

While the plotline is under wraps, Jayna is known for her talent of transforming into an animal, while Zan is a shapeshifter of sorts. The characters made their debut on The All-New Super Friends Hour from Hanna-Barbera and then appeared in The World’s Greatest Super Friends, Super Friends and Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show.

Their history: Zan and Jayna are from the planet Exxor are were being informally trained by the DC superheroes. In a 1977 Super Friends comic book from E. Nelson Bridwell and artist Ramona Fradon, it’s further detailed that the twins were orphaned during a plague and adopted by the alien Exorians. Along the way, they’re given Gleek as a pet. After learning that villain Grax is set to destroy Earth, they travel there to warn the Justice League. They ultimately blend into life on Earth as Swedish exchange students, attending Gotham City High School. The Wonder Twins made cameos in other parts of the DC universe over the years, including TV shows Smallville, Teen Titans Go! and The Flash.

Black Adam and Rampage co-writer Adam Sztykiel is making his directorial debut on the popular DC comics IP off a script he wrote. Production is set to begin this summer in Atlanta. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey’s Temple Hill are producing.

Apa is well known for playing Archie on the CW/WBTV series Riverdale. His feature credits include the movies Songbird, The Hate U Give, A Dog’s Purpose and I Still Believe. He is repped by UTA, Matt Luber and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. May plays Elsa Dutton on Paramount+’s Yellowstone prequel series 1883. Her series credits include Alexa & Katie and Young Sheldon. She is managed by Coronel Group and attorney Patty Felker.

‘Riverdale’ Renewed for Season 6!

Riverdale has been renewed for a 6th season!

TV LINE – The CW is kicking February off with a blizzard (ha!) of renewals, picking up additional seasons of a dozen current series — including breakout hit Walker.

In addition to the aforementioned Jared Padalecki-fronted reboot, the list of shows confirmed to return for the 2021-22 TV season includes The Flash (Season 8), Riverdale (Season 6), DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (Season 7), All American (Season 4), Charmed (Season 4), Legacies (Season 4), In the Dark (Season 4), Roswell, New Mexico (Season 4), Batwoman (Season 3) Nancy Drew (Season 3) and, yes, Dynasty (Season 5).

As previously reported, the soon-to-launch new seasons of Supergirl and Black Lightning will be both series last.

Additionally, Superman & Lois — which is set to bow on Feb. 23 — has received an order for two additional episodes, bringing its Season 1 total to 15. (A Season 2 pickup for S&L is TBD.) Meanwhile, The CW is expanding Walker‘s inaugural season by 5 episodes, for a grand total of 18.

“Though we’re just a few weeks into the new season, we wanted to get a strategic head start on next season with these early renewals, which allows our production teams to start laying out story arcs and hiring staff, and at the same time, continues to provide us with a strong, stable schedule to build on for next season,” said CW Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz in a statement. “As The CW’s 2020-2021 season kicks into high gear, we are thrilled creatively with the direction of our first new shows out of the gate, Walker and Superman & Lois, that we wanted to order the additional episodes to complete their first seasons, and we are particularly pleased with the huge success of the launch of Walker, which debuted as our most watched series premiere in 5 years.”

‘Songbird’ Heads Directly to Premium Video-On-Demand

VARIETY – In a release plan fitting for a movie about a deadly pandemic that’s forced everyone into lockdown, STX’s sci-fi thriller “Songbird” won’t play in theaters and instead will debut on home entertainment.

Starting on Dec. 11, audiences can rent the film for $19.99 for a 48-hour period. STX said “Songbird” will land on a streaming service following its premium video-on-demand run, but the studio declined to disclose which one.

“The pandemic has affected every aspect of our business, from production to release, but ‘Songbird’ demonstrates that a nimble studio like STX can find effective and profitable ways to make their movies work,” said STXfilms Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson. “The show must go on. ‘Songbird’ is a thrilling movie that will speak to audiences in this moment as it keeps them on the edge of their seats.”

Produced by Michael Bay, “Songbird” was filmed entirely during the coronavirus crisis. It was the first movie to shoot in Los Angeles in the middle of the ongoing pandemic.

The film takes place years in the future, in which a mutated strand of coronavirus, called COVID-23, continues to wreak havoc on the world’s population. As the country-wide lockdown stretches into its fourth year, infected Americans are forced into quarantine camps. Amid the dystopia, one courier (portrayed by “Riverdale” star KJ Apa) who is immune to the virus, falls in love with an aspiring artist (Sofia Carson), who is believed to become infected.

Adam Mason directed the movie from a script he co-wrote with Simon Boyes. “Songbird” also stars Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford, Demi Moore and Paul Walter Hauser.

KJ Apa, Sofia Carson Join Pandemic Movie ‘Songbird’

VARIETY – KJ Apa and Sofia Carson will star in the pandemic thriller “Songbird,” joining previously announced cast members Demi Moore, Bradley Whitford, Craig Robinson, Jenna Ortega, Paul Walter Hauser and Peter Stormare.

“Songbird” producers announced on July 8 that they had launched principal photography in Los Angeles — the first film to shoot in the city since the start of coronavirus-induced lockdown. SAG-AFTRA issued a “do not work” order on the production on July 2, but rescinded it the next day.

The movie is directed by Adam Mason, who also wrote the script with Simon Boyes. Producers are former Paramount production chief Adam Goodman and former Disney exec Andrew Sugerman’s Invisible Narratives, with Catchlight Films and Michael Bay also producing.

“Songbird” takes place two years in the future, as a lockdown (to prevent the spread of coronavirus) is re-implemented after a more serious virus continues to mutate. The movie centers around an essential worker, played by Apa, who has a rare immunity and is therefore able to work as a delivery man. Carson portrays his girlfriend, who’s sheltering at home. To be with the one he loves, he must overcome martial law, murderous vigilantes and a powerful family, headed by Moore’s character.

Apa is best known for starring in “Riverdale.” He recently appeared in Lionsgate’s “I Still Believe,” which marked his first leading role in a studio movie. Carson currently stars in the Netflix feature film “Feel the Beat.”

‘Riverdale’ to be at Wonder Con

DEADLINE – Warner Bros. Television is making its way to WonderCon 2017, bringing its heroes, villains, time travelers and mysterious teens together under one roof. Four WBTV series will be attending the festivities that run March 31-April 2.

Panels and Q&A sessions with WonderCon newcomers Riverdale and Time After Time are set for Friday, March 31, with an exclusive screening of a new episode of Riverdale held on Saturday. Welcome to KJ Apa Access, your newest source for the talented New Zealand Actor, KJ Apa. I have become a huge fan of KJ while watching Riverdale and knew instantly I wanted to do a site. The site is still not complete, but I wanted to get it open during this 2 week hiatus. Riverdale returns back on March 30! Thank you to my good friend Jasper for the amazing themes.

You may know KJ from his roles in Shortland Street as Kane Jenkins or in The Cul De Sac as Jack. KJ also recently starred in the film A Dog’s Purpose.

The photo gallery has over 2,600+ photos from KJ’s appearances, photoshoots, television shows, and film productions. I will be working on the gallery over the next weeks/months to add everything of KJ’s career.
